Gorge Scrambling on Dartmoor
Gorge scrambling is an exhilarating and immersive adventure that doesn’t require strong swimming ability or high water confidence—just a willingness to embrace the wild beauty of nature!
We use the stunning River Plym, which flows off Dartmoor through one of the UK's rare temperate rainforests. As we work our way upstream, you’ll scramble over small waterfalls and rapids, leap into deep pools, and slide down natural rock chutes, all while surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
This activity is more about scrambling and walking through the river rather than full-on swimming, making it accessible for all abilities. If you need to take a breather or want to ease into the experience, there’s a riverside path that runs alongside much of the route. You have control over how immersive you want the experience to be—whether that’s staying knee-deep or diving right in!
Gorge scrambling is fantastic for building water confidence, but it’s also a great way to develop self-reliance, resilience, and teamwork. As you navigate the river, you’ll need to work together, support one another, and challenge yourself to overcome obstacles, making it an excellent confidence-boosting activity.
We can also offer gorge scrambling as part of a curriculum-centred programme, such as a Key Stage 2 rivers project, providing a hands-on way to explore river processes, physical geography, and environmental science. The experience brings learning to life, helping students develop a deeper understanding of rivers while engaging in an exciting outdoor adventure.
We primarily use the River Plym, but we can also explore other suitable Dartmoor rivers based on conditions and group needs.
We provide all the essential equipment—wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets, and more—so all you need to bring is: An old pair of well-fitting trainers (that tie securely) Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit A towel for drying off afterward
